Plain Language in Journalism Interview Information
View this information as a PDF
We are a group of researchers and journalists. Our names are:
Becca Monteleone
Amy Silverman
Beena Raghavendran
We are doing a project about how people with disabilities get their news. We are writing news stories using simple language. We will show you news stories written in different ways. We will ask:
Which version you like better,
Changes you would make,
Other ways to make news easier to read.
If you decide to talk to us, we will talk for about 30-60 minutes. We can talk in-person, on the phone or through video chat like Skype or Zoom.
You can say NO to taking part. You will not be in any trouble if you don’t want to take part.
If you say yes, but later decide you don’t want to talk anymore, you can stop at any time.
If you say yes and you are your own guardian, you will need to sign a paper.
If you say yes, but you have a guardian, your guardian will also need to agree.
Information like your name, where you live, and what you look like will stay private. Only our team will know who you are.
What you tell us might be published in writing or in a presentation. We will not share your name or private info.
You will get a $25 gift card for talking to us.
One possible risk is loss of confidentiality. That means someone might find out who you are. But we are doing what we can to make sure your information stays private.
There are no other foreseeable risks to you. That means we don’t think anything bad will happen during the interview.
After the interview, we will send you updates about the project. You will be able to give us feedback. This means you can tell us if the results make sense. You can also tell us if you want to add anything else.
